Celebrity speakers Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson form the latest boy band to reach global stardom, One Direction. As solo contenders on season seven of the hit British reality singing competition series, The X Factor, the five artists were put together by the show’s creator, Simon Cowell, and the group One Direction was born in 2010. Since then, the boy band has released four top selling albums, Up All Night in 2011, Take Me Home in 2012, Midnight Memories in 2013, and Four.
The group has already won countless awards so early in in their career including Teen Choice Awards for Choice Summer Tour, Choice Single: Group, Choice Music: Love Song, and Choice Music Group. They also have won People’s Choice Awards for Favorite Album for the album Up All Night and Favorite Song for the song What Makes You Beautiful. In 2013 they won two American Music Awards, one for Favorite Pop/Rock Album for their album Take Me Home, and the other for Favorite Pop/Rock Band/Duo/Group. One Direction also holds three records in the Guinness Book of World Records, one for being the first British group in US chart history to have an album go straight to number one on the United States Billboard 200, another for being the most followed pop band on Twitter, and the third for having the highest debut by a UK group on the US singles chart for their song Live While We’re Young. In 2014, One Direction became the first band in the U.S Billboard 200 history to have their first four albums debut at number one and were named Artist of the Year by Billboard.
