NFL great and top football motivational speaker for hire Joe Montana played 16 seasons in the NFL, most notably for the San Francisco 49ers. He will go down as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history not only for his many records and accomplishments but also his uncanny ability to bring his team back from the brink of defeat in late game situations. Since retiring from the NFL in 1995, Joe has had several successful business ventures including a wine label called Montagia. Joe is also a highly-touted celebrity spokesperson having most recently appeared in TV and print ads for AT&T and MasterCard.
Joe is a Pennsylvania native who was a multi-sport athlete in high school. In fact, basketball was his first love although he would attend Notre Dame on a football scholarship. Montana had grit, and perhaps one of his most memorable football moments came in the 1979 Cotton Bowl when a cold case of hypothermia threatened to keep him off the field. In what is now known as the “Chicken Soup Game”, Joe missed most of the 3rd quarter in the locker room where team trainers gave him warming IVs, covered him in blankets and fed him chicken soup. He returned to the game late in the 3rd quarter with the Fighting Irish down 34-12 to Houston. He went on to lead the team to 3 straight touchdowns in 8 minutes to steal the win, 35-34.
Although heavily talented, Joe was not high on the 1979 NFL Draft board and was taken in the 3rd round by the 49ers. The rest is history! 2 years later he led the 49ers to a historic comeback victory over the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game when he found Dwight Clark in the endzone for a go-ahead touchdown with just 51 seconds left. The play has since been dubbed “The Catch”, and is clip that finds its way onto most NFL and Playoff highlight reels. Days later, Joe helped the 49ers win the first of 4 Super Bowl titles. Over the course of his career, comeback victories late in games became old hat for Montana. He is highly praised for his steely nerve and calm demeanor under pressure. He is the only player in NFL history to win 3 Super Bowl MVP awards.
