Published author, three-time Emmy Award winner, and Sports Speaker Jim Nantz has certainly seen it all in his years as a broadcaster. Nantz graduated from the University of Houston in 1981 with a degree in radio/television where he was a member of the golf team. From there, he was a broadcaster for the Utah Jazz and finally became a part of the CBS team where he would cover a variety of sports.
Nantz started at CBS as the host of the college football studio show and lead the play-by-play voice with cohost Bill Simms for the NFL on CBS; he also anchored the NFL pre-game studio show for six years on CBS. He is currently the lead play-by-play anchor for NFL on CBS alongside color analyst Tony Romo, quickly becoming the best commenting duo in the NFL. Nantz has also covered sports broadcasting for golf at CBS for over two decades, covering the PGA Tour on CBS and The Masters as host since 1986 and 1989, respectively.
Aside from golf and football, Nantz has also called college basketball for CBS, including the NCAA Tournament and the Final Four. At the 1988 Winter Olympic Games in Calgary, Nantz had the opportunity to serve as the Primetime Host, covering multiple sports in this worldwide broadcast event.
Sports Speaker Jim Nantz is highly decorated in his time as a sports broadcaster being a three-time Emmy Award winner and five-time National Sportscaster of the Year by the Sportswriter Association and the National Sportscasters. He also received the Curt Gowdy Award for outstanding contributions to basketball by members of the electronic and print media community in 2002. Nantz is the youngest recipient of the award. Nantz also is the youngest recipient of the Pro football hall of fame Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award, which he received in August of 2011. Nantz was also awarded the Ambassador Award of Excellence by the LA Sports & Entertainment Commission in 2012 for his outstanding involvement in the community.
Not only is he recognized for his achievements in the booth, but Jim is also a published author. He debuted with his first book Always By My Side: A Father’s Grace and a Sports Journey Unlike Any Other with Eli Spielman in 2008, and a follow up, Always by My Side: A Heartwarming Story of Faith, Loyalty, Love, Optimism, Courage, and Grace the following year. The foreword is written by his friend and father figure, former President George H.W. Bush. The book detailed his life in sports and the lasting impact his father has had on him. The book climbed to No. 3 on the New York Time’s Best Seller List. Nantz’s father passed of Alzheimer’s the year the book was released, and in January 2011, Nantz, along with The Methodist Hospital in Houston, launched the Nantz National Alzheimer Center. The center improves care and treatment for patients with Alzheimer’s, and advances research.
