Pro Football Hall of Famer Howie Long is currently a studio analyst for Fox’s NFL coverage. He played football for Villanova University and was named MVP in 1980. As a freshman, he started every game and during the season, had 99 tackles.
In the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft, Howie was drafted by the Oakland Raiders and would play 13 seasons for the franchise. As a combination of size, strength and quickness made Howie a force on the Raiders defensive line, which earned him eight Pro Bowl selections. He was named First-team All-Pro three times and Second-team All-Pro twice. He was voted the NFL Alumni Defensive Lineman of the Year and the NFLPA AFC Defensive Lineman of the Year. In 1986, he was voted to his fourth consecutive Pro Bow and at the time of his retirement, he was the last player still with the team who had been a Raider before the team moved to LA.
Howie Long won the Super Bowl XVIII beating the Washington Redskins. His signature defensive move was the “rip” which broke an opposing blocker’s grip.
When Howie retired after the 1993 season, he pursued an acting career, focusing on action films. He appeared in many TV shows and commercials including, Radio Shack, Coors Light, Nike, Campbell’s Chunky Soup, Hanes, Frito Lay, both Coca-Cola and Pepsi, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Nabisco, Kraft, the Bud Bowl campaign, Honda and currently for Chevrolet. He became a studio analyst for Fox Network’s NFL coverage with co-host Terry Bradshaw and writes a column for Foxsports.com. Being very proud of his alma mater, Howie recently donated one million dollars to the Villanova football program to create the Howie Long Strength Training Center and in recognition of his commitment, Villanova announced that the team’s Defensive Player of the Year award would be named after him. Howie Long is available for sporting events, speaking engagements, and public events.
