Bob Costas began his broadcasting career while he was a student at Syracuse University. He was the announcer for the Syracuse Blazers minor-league hockey team playing in the Eastern Hockey League and North American Hockey League.
Bob’s professional career began at KMOX radio in St. Louis; here he was the play-by-play announcer for the Spirits of St. Louis of the American Basketball Association. Also on the KMOX station, he called the Missouri Tigers basketball and co-hosted the stations Open Line call in program.
Bob Costas contributed to the ABA book Loose Balls: The Short, Wild Life of the American Basketball Association. He is quoted throughout the book and he reflects on his career as the radio voice for the Spirits of St. Louis. Bob also led his voice to the Chicago Bulls as he did play-by-play broadcasts on WGN-TV during the 1979-1980 season. Prior to joining NBC Sports in 1980, he was briefly employed by the CBS network.
Bob also was the in-studio host of National Football League coverage and the play-by-play for the NBA and for the MLB. Working as a basketball broadcaster, Bob has worked with Isiah Thomas and Doug Colling, Tony Kubek, Joe, Morgan and Bob Uecker for baseball telecasts. As analyst for NFL games, Bob worked with Bob Trumpy before becoming the studio host for The NFL on NBC in 1984. Bob has also frontlined the Olympic broadcasts for NBC for eight Olympic Games. Bob is currently hosts a monthly talk show called Costas Tonight on NBC Sports Network.
Bob Costas has won multiple National Sportcaster of the Year, awards from the National Sportcasters and Sportswriters Association and the American Sportscasters Association. He has won twenty Emmy Awards for outstanding sports announcing and has received the Curt Gowdy Award. In 2004, he was awarded the Dick Schaap Award for Outstanding Journalism, and was awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Loyola College.
Bob is an honorary board member of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, does charity work for St. Louis Bob Costas Charity Event and the Cape Girardeau Bob Costas Charity Event. Bob is available for public events, PR campaigns and speaking engagements.
