Misty May-Treanor, an American professional volleyball player, played her first professional match on the AVP tour in May 1999, while still at college senior at Long Beach State. Here she led her team to a National Championship against Penn State and the 49ers were the first women’s NCAA volleyball team to have an undefeated season. Soon after graduating from Long Beach State, Misty May joined the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team in the summer of 1999, but only to quit saying, “volleyball was not fun anymore.” Instead, Misty took up beach volleyball and teamed with Holly McPeak to go after a medal in the 2000 Summer Olympics. They played their first tournament together on the FIVB tour in Salvador, Brazil in November of 1999 going in seeded 22nd. Holly and Misty finished 9th overall.
Trying had to get a Olympic qualification, Misty May and Holly McPeak found fast success in international and domestic play in the 2000 season. Together, they won their first tournament in April at a USAV event, two wins on the FIVB tour and one win at the BVA tournament. With three FIVB tournament wins and no finishes lower than 5th place, they qualified for one of two U.S. Olympic spots and made their way to the Sydney Games. Giving it their all, they achieved a 5th place finish.
Misty May completed the 2000 season with Holly, and then teamed up with Kerri Walsh. For two years the pair played on the international FIVB tour, where they were crowned champions in 2002. The next year, Misty and Kerri signed with AVP and went on to win Team of the Year with an undefeated season of 39-0 with eight tournament wins. The duo has dominated the AVP and FIVB beach volleyball tours with a win streak of 101 matches and 18 tournaments which began in June 2007, right before the start of the 2008 Olympics. The pair won gold at the Beijing Olympics and then returned to the AVP Tour with a win streak of 112 matches. This was broken with an upset by fellow 2008 Olympians Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs. By 2012, Misty became a three-time Olympic Gold medalist.
In 2001, Misty May began working as an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Irvine Valley College. Currently, Misty is working on an online video of Sportskool, demonstrating how to properly block, attack, serve and play defense. Misty was also on Dancing with the Stars in 2008 and partnered with Maxim and hosts volleyball camps. Gatorade, Nike and Mikasa are proud sponsors of Misty May Treanor. She is available for corporate events, speaking and autograph signings.
